TSA to Charge $45 for Alternative ID Verification Without REAL ID

Starting February 1, 2024, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will introduce a $45 fee for air travelers who do not possess a REAL ID. This fee allows them to utilize the TSA’s alternative identity verification system known as TSA ConfirmID.
TSA ConfirmID Verification System
Travelers aged 18 and over who lack a REAL ID or other acceptable forms of identification can pay this fee to undergo identity verification. TSA ConfirmID must be completed prior to entering airport security.
Verification Process Details
The $45 fee, applicable for each identity verification, must be paid digitally. Travelers are encouraged to verify their REAL ID compliance before heading to the airport. Those without a REAL ID should visit tsa.gov/ConfirmID to pay the fee and present their receipt to TSA personnel.
QR codes are also available at airports, allowing travelers to initiate the process. However, specifics may vary between different airport locations.
What Is TSA ConfirmID?
The TSA ConfirmID process utilizes biometric methods along with biographic checks—including name and date of birth—to confirm a traveler’s identity. The initial fee was proposed at $18 but was later increased to $45 after a review indicated that the lower amount would not adequately cover the costs involved in operating the system.
Importance of REAL ID
This development is part of the ongoing enforcement of the REAL ID Act of 2005, designed to enhance identification standards following the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. Although the requirement was fully rolled out by 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its implementation.
Alternative Acceptable Forms of Identification
If travelers do not have a REAL ID, several other forms are accepted, including:
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- Trusted Traveler Card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
- U.S. Department of Defense ID (including military and dependent IDs)
- Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
- Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe Photo ID
- Foreign Government-Issued Passports
- Transportation Worker ID Credential
- Veteran Health ID Card (VHIC)
Current Compliance Statistics
As of December, approximately 94% of Americans possess a REAL ID-compliant identification form. For those who do not, the new TSA ConfirmID process will be crucial in maintaining access to air travel.
