Less than 24 hours before the race, van der Poel announced his participation via Alpecin-Premier Tech’s social media platforms. His previous commitment to endurance training briefly overshadowed his competitive spirit.
Track Record in Benidorm
Van der Poel’s history at the Benidorm event is impressive. He won the inaugural race in 2023 and finished fifth in 2024, despite experiencing a crash. He did not compete last year, heightening expectations for his return.
Course Changes in 2026
This year, the course presents new challenges. Organizers have introduced an uphill start-finish zone beyond a flight of stairs. Additionally, the old finish area has transformed into a 100-meter sandpit, aiming for a more tactical race.

Mathieu van der Poel leads the World Cup standings with 200 points, having won all five events he entered. His closest competitor, Thibau Nys, is ten points behind in second place, while Michael Vanthourenhout ranks third with 187 points.
