Spot the $800K Penny: Key Markings to Check in Your Change Jar

A penny could soon become a significant asset, especially with the discovery of certain rare coins. The last pennies minted in November have gained immense value, with one auction in California marking a record sale totaling $16.76 million. This auction, organized by Stack’s Bowers Galleries, showcased rare coins on behalf of the U.S. Mint.
Record Auction for Rare Pennies
During the event, bidders engaged in four hours of competitive bidding. The average price for each three-coin set reached around $72,000, while 17 sets sold for over $100,000. The highest sale from the auction was Set #232, which commanded an astonishing $800,000.
Key Markings to Spot Valuable Pennies
Coins from the 2025 Omega class can be identified by a tiny “Ω” symbol located behind Lincoln’s shoulder. This marking signifies the coin’s historical importance, as it represents the conclusion of a two-century legacy that began in 1793 with the Chain Cent.
How to Check Your Change Jar
Collectors and enthusiasts should be vigilant when examining their change. Below are three tests that can help identify valuable pennies:
- The 2025 Omega Scan: Look for the “Ω” symbol behind Lincoln’s shoulder on 2025 pennies.
- The “S” Hunt: Any penny marked with an “S” indicates it was minted in San Francisco. Some years, like 1931, are particularly valuable.
- The Magnet Test: Use a magnet on a 1943 penny. If it sticks, it’s steel and worth around 10 cents. If it doesn’t, it’s copper and could be worth up to $100,000.
Moreover, the 1944 steel pennies are extremely rare and can fetch prices in the hundreds of thousands. In 2021, a particular coin from this year sold for a record-breaking $408,000.
The Economic Impact of Penny Discontinuation
The surge in penny values came just a month after the U.S. Mint ceased production of new pennies, following directive from President Donald Trump. He noted that the cost of producing pennies had exceeded their face value, labeling it as wasteful.
As interest in these valuable coins rises, individuals should carefully evaluate their change jars. Identifying the right pennies can transform a simple collection into a lucrative investment.
