Jennifer Lawrence Missed Tarantino Role for Not Meeting Beauty Standards

Jennifer Lawrence, an Academy Award-winning actress, recently revealed that her looks may have cost her a significant movie role. In a podcast episode of “Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz,” she disclosed that she was not cast in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood” due to comments about her beauty.
Missed Opportunity in Tarantino’s Film
During the podcast, Lawrence recalled how she heard remarks suggesting she was “not pretty enough” to portray Sharon Tate. This role ultimately went to Margot Robbie. Lawrence expressed disbelief about the comments, stating, “I’m pretty sure it happened,” but also acknowledged her long-standing retelling of the story.
Background on the Audition
Lawrence’s connection with Tarantino dates back to discussions about another film. Tarantino previously expressed admiration for her performance, stating he was a “huge Jennifer Lawrence fan.” In 2015, he had pursued her for the role of Daisy Domergue in “The Hateful Eight,” but she declined due to prior commitments with “The Hunger Games.”
Comments from Tate’s Family
Debra Tate, sister of the late actress Sharon Tate, weighed in on the casting choice. She stated her preference for Robbie over Lawrence, citing Robbie’s “physical beauty” and demeanor as reasons for her decision. Debra remarked, “That’s a horrible thing to say but, you know, I have my standards.”
Alternate Casting Choices
Beyond the role of Sharon Tate, Tarantino considered Lawrence for another character, Squeaky, a follower of Charles Manson. However, this option did not materialize, with the role ultimately filled by Dakota Fanning. Tarantino noted, “It didn’t work out, but she’s a very nice person and I respect her as an actress.”
Reflections on Beauty Standards
During her candid conversation, Lawrence also touched on the persistent pressure of beauty standards within the film industry. She mentioned auditioning for “Twilight” and humorously indicated she did not receive the role due to her looks, stating, “I guess I was too ugly.”
These revelations highlight the challenges faced by actresses regarding physical appearance and its impact on career opportunities in Hollywood.
