Alicia Tournebize to Debut for South Carolina Women’s Basketball Against Texas

South Carolina’s women’s basketball team is set to welcome Alicia Tournebize, a 6-foot-7 forward, for her debut against Texas on January 15. The freshman from Vichy, France, has been preparing for this moment since joining the program at the start of January.

Alicia Tournebize’s Journey

Tournebize announced her commitment to South Carolina on December 22 and officially arrived on January 1. After completing necessary paperwork, she started practicing with her new teammates during the first week of January.

Coach’s Confidence

Head coach Dawn Staley has expressed excitement about Tournebize’s performance in practice. Prior to the Gamecocks’ recent game against Georgia, Staley commented on Tournebize’s readiness to contribute. “She looked good,” Staley said. “She’ll definitely play.”

Upcoming Challenges

The Gamecocks, currently ranked No. 2 with a 17-1 record, will face No. 4 Texas, who holds an 18-1 record, at Colonial Life Arena. This highly anticipated match is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN.

  • Debut Date: January 15
  • Opponent: Texas
  • Location: Colonial Life Arena
  • Game Time: 7 p.m. ET

Staley noted that Tournebize’s participation could impact team dynamics, particularly the minutes played by sophomore forward Joyce Edwards, who leads the team with an average of 20.7 points per game. Edwards suggested that Tournebize’s skills would make it difficult for opponents to scout against her.

Experience and Skills

Alicia Tournebize brings valuable experience from her time with Tango Bourges Basket in France. Despite being among the youngest on her previous team, she scored 12 points in her first game of the season. Additionally, she made a name for herself on the international stage during the 2025 FIBA U18 EuroBasket tournament, averaging 12 points and 8.9 rebounds.

Family Legacy

Basketball runs in Tournebize’s family. Her mother, Isabelle Fijalkowski, played for Colorado before being drafted by the Cleveland Rockers in 1997. Fijalkowski had a short but impactful career in the WNBA before returning to France to continue playing basketball.

Future Expectations

Tournebize is also noted for her unique athleticism. She became the first recorded French woman to dunk in a game in September 2024. Her potential to influence both ends of the floor excites the coaching staff and her teammates alike.

With the upcoming game against Texas, South Carolina’s fans eagerly await Alicia Tournebize’s debut, hoping to witness the skills that could shape the season ahead.
