Yellow Alert Issued: Snow Accumulation and Slick Roads Expected Thursday

A Yellow Alert has been issued for Rochester, NY, due to expected snow accumulation and slick road conditions. This alert will be in effect from Wednesday night into Thursday, marking a significant weather event with potential impacts for residents.

Snow Accumulation Forecast

This winter storm may lead to the largest snowfall of the season thus far. Snow accumulation is predicted to vary across the region:

  • Finger Lakes: 1-3 inches by Thursday morning
  • Rochester and areas north and west: 2-4 inches

The snowfall is expected to be heavy and wet, with initial temperatures near freezing. However, temperatures will drop significantly on Thursday, resulting in fluffier snow and enhanced snow accumulation from Lake Ontario.

Lake Effect Snow and Travel Impact

Snowfall will diminish through the morning, but lake enhancement will increase snow totals during the day. An additional 3-6 inches of fluffy snow is expected, primarily north of the Thruway. This will create slick conditions on many roads, particularly affecting the morning commute.

Drivers should anticipate slower travel times due to snow-covered roads. Furthermore, another band of lake effect snow may return, impacting the evening commute as well.

Temperature and Wind Chill

As temperatures fall into the teens on Thursday, wind chills could drop below zero. This combination of cold temperatures and heavy snow adds to the urgency for drivers to exercise caution on the roads.

By Thursday night, snowfall will taper off, with only an additional inch or two predicted near the lake. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepared for winter conditions throughout the day.
