Prepare for an Earthquake: Four Essential Tips by Healthy Alameda

Emergencies, including earthquakes, wildfires, and power outages, can arise unexpectedly in Alameda. Preparing in advance is crucial for ensuring safety during such events.
Prepare for an Earthquake: Four Essential Tips
Experts stress the importance of having a well-thought-out preparedness plan. Pete Alimi, environmental health and safety manager at Alameda Health System (AHS), emphasizes taking specific steps to ensure safety during an emergency. Here are four essential tips to prepare for an earthquake:
- Water Supply: Store at least one gallon of water per person, per day. A minimum three-day supply is essential to maintain hydration during infrastructure failures.
- Non-Perishable Food: Keep a three-day stock of non-perishable food. If you plan to remain at home, aim for up to two weeks’ worth. Adequate food supplies will help sustain families during emergencies.
- First-Aid Supplies: Maintain a well-equipped first-aid kit. Injuries are more likely during emergencies, making it imperative to have updated supplies. Additional valuable items include flashlights, radios, blankets, and dry clothing.
- Communication Planning: Create a communication plan with family members. Designate a meeting spot in case phone services become disrupted, to ensure everyone’s safety and coordination.
The Importance of Seismic Preparedness
Alameda Hospital plays a critical role in the community’s emergency response. To ensure its continued operation after an earthquake, AHS is working with the City of Alameda Health Care District on significant seismic upgrades to the hospital structure. Ongoing assessments and modifications are being managed by specialized contractors.
Comprehensive Emergency Readiness
In addition to earthquake preparedness, AHS trains staff to respond effectively to other potential emergencies, including power outages and infectious disease outbreaks. Regular drills help ensure swift action when crises occur.
Enhanced digital communication systems are implemented, improving coordination during emergencies. “In disasters, communication is the most important factor,” Alimi stated. Effective internal collaboration is critical for managing emergencies successfully.
While residents work to keep their families safe, healthcare facilities remain focused on providing consistent, lifesaving care amidst various challenges. AHS is committed to its mission of caring, healing, teaching, and serving all, recognizing that preparedness is an integral part of fulfilling this promise.
