Toronto Maple Leafs Star Honors Late Fan and Grocery Store Worker

A Toronto Maple Leafs player recently paid tribute to a beloved grocery store worker and fan who passed away unexpectedly. Bobby McMann honored Kevin Wilson during a game against the Vancouver Canucks, wearing a yellow safety vest similar to the one Wilson donned every day at his job.
Honoring a Lifelong Leafs Fan
Kevin Wilson, aged 48, was a front-end service clerk at Loblaws on Lake Shore Boulevard West and Bathurst Street in Toronto. He died due to complications from meningitis, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and a passion for hockey.
McMann, who was familiar with Wilson from shopping at Loblaws, wore Wilson’s nametag during the game as a heartfelt tribute. “Just a really good spirit, really good person,” McMann shared, highlighting Wilson’s positive impact on those who visited the store. He remembered Wilson as a lifelong Leafs fan who always engaged in conversations about hockey.
A Community’s Remembrance
Loblaws has created a memorial at the entrance of the store, featuring photos of Wilson, flowers, cards, and a Maple Leafs jersey and scarf. A heartfelt message posted on Facebook stated, “Kevin was the heart of our team and was loved by so many of our staff and customers.”

Frank Crupi, a customer and hockey influencer, praised McMann’s tribute, emphasizing its significance. “That was a beautiful, significant piece of symbolism,” he commented, reflecting on how McMann frequently visited the store and developed a bond with Wilson.
A Lasting Friendship
Crupi first met Wilson about four years ago while shopping at Loblaws. Their connection grew as they would discuss the Toronto Maple Leafs, with Wilson always sporting his team’s colors. “He was one of the most die-hard fans I knew,” Crupi noted.
Wilson’s warmth extended beyond his interactions with McMann. He was well-known among customers, including Randy and Karen Kushnir, who described him as “a very, very nice man” with an infectious enthusiasm for the team.
A Community’s Loss
Several customers expressed their sorrow over Wilson’s passing. Nicolas Wen Shea remarked on Wilson’s constant positivity, even in the face of challenges. “You wouldn’t know if the Leafs lost 6-1,” he recalled. “He was an extreme optimist.”
To assist with funeral costs, a GoFundMe campaign has been started in Wilson’s name. The fundraiser captures his spirit perfectly, stating, “He truly was a ray of sunshine, and his kindness and warmth will be forever missed.”
