Rishabh Pant Out of New Zealand ODI; Dhruv Jurel Joins Squad

In a significant update for Indian cricket, Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand due to an injury. Dhruv Jurel has been named as his replacement, stepping in to fill the void left by the talented wicketkeeper.
Rishabh Pant’s Injury Details
Rishabh Pant sustained a side strain during practice in Vadodara, where he was struck on the ribs. Initial scans confirmed the injury, leading to his withdrawal from the three-match ODI series. Pant experienced severe discomfort after an impact during a training session with a throwdown specialist.
He had been training vigorously, showing promise in his batting, but the injury forced him to leave the nets in considerable pain. Medical assessments revealed a ribcage injury that required immediate attention.
Dhruv Jurel Joins the Squad
Dhruv Jurel, who has demonstrated impressive form for Uttar Pradesh in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, has been called up to join the Indian squad. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Jurel has already linked up with the team.
About Dhruv Jurel
- Current form: Jurel has excelled in recent matches, showcasing his abilities consistently.
- Previous performance: He has been instrumental in Uttar Pradesh’s campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
- Role in the team: Expected to step into the wicketkeeping role, supporting the batting lineup.
ODI Series Schedule
The ODI series against New Zealand is set to commence with the first match at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara. This venue will mark its debut hosting a men’s international game.
The subsequent matches are scheduled as follows:
- Second ODI: January 14 at Niranjan Shah Stadium, Rajkot
- Third ODI: January 18 at Holkar Stadium, Indore
Pant’s injury comes as a blow not just for him but also for the Indian squad, as he has been a pivotal player in ODIs over the past two years. He last participated in an ODI during the Sri Lanka tour in August 2024. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, had retained him earlier, but now must recalibrate their strategy with Jurel’s addition to the team.
As the series approaches, all eyes will be on Dhruv Jurel’s performance, hoping he can make a significant impact in Pant’s absence.
