Mississippi Tornadoes Wreak Havoc; Millions Face Severe Storms and Flooding

Severe weather has unleashed havoc across the South, with tornadoes and heavy rainfall threatening multiple states. Meteorologists have issued flash flood advisories and tornado warnings as the region braces for ongoing storms.

Mississippi Tornadoes and Severe Storms Impact the Region

On Friday, severe storms rolled through the South, leading to numerous Tornado Warnings and flash flood threats affecting states such as Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. The risks are heightened due to recent drought conditions, which make areas more susceptible to flooding.

Severe Weather Alerts and Impacts

A radar loop displayed significant storm activity, indicating areas of severe weather:

  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch (Yellow)
  • Tornado Watch (Red)
  • Confirmed Tornado Warnings (Purple)
  • Flash Flood Warnings (Green)
  • Flash Flood Emergencies (Pink)

The highest risk for flash flooding was concentrated around Southern Mississippi, particularly near Hattiesburg and south of Jackson, where rain rates reached as much as three inches per hour. Flood watches extend over 600 miles, affecting regions from New Orleans to Nashville.

Severe Storm Risks and Forecast

Over eight million people are currently at risk, rated 2 out of 5, for severe storms. Areas of concern include:

  • Baton Rouge, Louisiana
  • Memphis, Tennessee
  • Birmingham, Alabama

Damaging winds and potential tornadoes continue to pose a threat, with at least two radar-confirmed tornadoes reported in Mississippi early Friday morning. These storms were fueled by a cold front generating heavy rainfall across the region.

Previous Tornado Activity

The severe weather risk follows incidents earlier in the week, including an EF-2 tornado that struck Purcell, Oklahoma. Though there were no injuries, the tornado caused significant damage, uprooting trees and downing power lines.

Ongoing Threats and Future Forecasts

The storm system is expected to move eastward, maintaining a level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk through Saturday. Central and Southern Alabama, along with Western Georgia, remain on alert as storms progress into the Carolinas.

The potential for flash flooding persists, particularly in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, with impacts anticipated for planned events, such as NFL playoff games. Authorities advise residents to stay informed and prepared for rapid weather changes.
