The test flight involved several union representatives, as concerns regarding the tight new seating configuration had been raised. This particular configuration reduces legroom, prompting significant backlash from passengers. A viral TikTok video, viewed over 1.1 million times, showcased a couple struggling to fit into the cramped seats.
Details of the Seating Arrangement
- The seating configuration allows for only 28 inches of pitch.
- Most airlines offer 29 or 30 inches of pitch in their economy sections.
- The seats have a “fixed recline design,” meaning they do not tilt back.
Passengers, including the TikTok user’s parents, expressed discomfort, stating that their knees could not extend fully. One father commented, “I’m sharing leg space with him,” highlighting the lack of personal space.
Reactions from Unions and Executives
The flight attendants’ union raised concerns that the new configuration could compromise passenger safety, particularly during emergency evacuations. Union official Alia Hussain relayed that many executives acknowledged the discomfort of the new seating arrangement, especially on longer flights.
Jacob Astin, head of the Air Line Pilots Association at WestJet, noted that while Transport Canada approved the changes, they diminish safety margins compared to previous layouts. No other major Canadian airline features seating with such limited legroom.
Consumer Concerns and Future Plans
The airline’s modifications are intended to accommodate more passengers and lower fares. Currently, 21 Boeing 737 jets are being outfitted with the tighter seating configuration, with plans to add more rows and tiers.
Moreover, WestJet has introduced options for more spacious seating at a premium price. The airline plans to resume the reconfiguration process in spring 2024 after pausing for the busy winter season.
Passenger Rights and Safety Regulations
Consumer advocates emphasize that airlines must ensure all passengers can fit comfortably in their seats. Activist Gabor Lukacs warned of potential breaches of contract if a passenger cannot occupy their seat. He also raised concerns about the ability of individuals to assume the brace position required during emergencies.
Transport Canada maintains that seating changes must adhere to safety standards. The agency will investigate any complaints regarding non-compliance. Passengers are encouraged to voice any concerns directly to WestJet.
