Howe Hints at January Exit, Provides Dan Burn Update

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe held a press conference addressing several player injuries and transfer possibilities. Central to the discussion was the injury update on Fabian Schar, who appears to be suffering from ligament damage in his ankle. While the injury is concerning, Howe confirmed it is not a broken ankle. Schar, aged 34, is scheduled to consult a specialist within the upcoming days.

Update on Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles

Howe also spoke about the availability of defender Dan Burn, who is recovering from a lung and rib issue. Following the team’s midweek victory against Leeds, Howe indicated that Burn is making progress but remains “a few weeks away” from returning to match fitness. He is currently able to run on the grass but will need significant time to heal completely, especially with upcoming fixtures against Bournemouth, Manchester City, and Wolves.

Potential January Exits

A significant point raised during the conference involved Jamaal Lascelles. The 32-year-old defender is not participating in training due to physical health issues, though he doesn’t seem to have a singular major injury. Lascelles has only played a brief 19 minutes this season, making his only appearance off the bench in late September. His contract expires at the end of the season, prompting speculation regarding his future at the club.

  • Fabian Schar: Likely ligament damage; specialist visit imminent.
  • Dan Burn: Recovering from lung and rib injuries; expected return in a few weeks.
  • Jamaal Lascelles: Out of training; potential January exit; only 19 minutes played this season.

Howe praised Lascelles as an integral part of the squad, emphasizing his leadership qualities. However, the possibility of Lascelles exiting the club this month remains on the table as decisions will need to be made regarding his role moving forward.
