Mayor Mamdani Appoints Ali Najmi to Lead Judiciary Advisory Committee

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has appointed Ali Najmi as the Chair of the revamped Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary. This initiative aims to enhance transparency within the judicial selection process.

Commitment to Transparency in Judicial Selection

During the announcement, Mayor Mamdani emphasized the importance of openness in the judicial system. “The judicial branch plays a crucial role in our democracy,” he stated. “It is often inaccessible and shrouded in secrecy.” His administration aims to ensure that the judicial system mirrors the diverse population it serves.

Goals of the Advisory Committee

  • Engage the wider legal community, including public defenders and family court attorneys
  • Publish demographic data on judicial applicants
  • Create a searchable database for appointment tracking
  • Extend committee member terms from two to four years

Najmi expressed his dedication to this mission, stating, “A fair and equitable legal system is determined by our judges.” He aims to make the judicial selection more inclusive so that the 8.5 million residents of New York City feel represented.

Support for this initiative has come from various legal experts. Juval O. Scott, Executive Director of The Bronx Defenders, praised the Mamdani administration for valuing the insights of public defenders. He noted how critical their perspectives are in informing judicial appointments.

Twyla Carter, Attorney-in-Charge of The Legal Aid Society, congratulated Najmi on his appointment. She highlighted his extensive background in civil rights and defense, which will enhance understanding of justice-related issues affecting New Yorkers.

Ali Najmi is a well-respected civil rights and election attorney. He founded and previously served as President of the South Asian and Indo-Caribbean Bar Association of Queens (SAICBAQ), where he worked to increase judicial diversity. He is also a member of several prominent legal associations.

Najmi is an alumnus of Oberlin College and the City University of New York School of Law. His leadership is anticipated to have a significant impact on the judicial system in New York City.
