Royal Caribbean Innovates with Facial Recognition for Smart Cabin Doors

Royal Caribbean is enhancing the traditional cruise experience by introducing innovative facial recognition technology for cabin doors. This new system aims to improve convenience for passengers by enabling them to unlock their cabin doors using facial identification, eliminating the need for physical cards or wearables.
Introduction of Smart Cabin Doors
The cruise line’s journey towards a more tech-savvy approach began with a patent filed in May 2020. This patent, titled “Multifunction Smart Door Device,” received approval in April 2024, four years after submission. This technological leap aligns with the upcoming launch of the Star of the Seas in August 2025, intended to incorporate this advanced cabin door system.
Key Features of the Facial Recognition System
- Facial Recognition: A wide-angle camera will recognize passengers as they approach, automatically unlocking the door.
- Digital Peephole: This feature allows passengers to view who is at their door via a live app feed, enhancing security.
- Manual Override: The system includes a keypad as a backup option for accessing cabins.
Benefits of Facial Recognition Technology
Royal Caribbean envisions a “frictionless” travel experience. Jay Schneider, the Chief Product Innovation Officer, emphasizes that facial recognition is a more practical solution compared to wearable devices. A passenger’s face remains accessible at all times, eliminating the risk of forgetting a card in the cabin.
This technology isn’t just about unlocking doors but also personalizing cabin experiences. It can adjust room settings such as temperature and lighting based on passenger preferences upon entry.
Future Implications and Testing
Although a patent represents a concept rather than a definitive product, Royal Caribbean plans to test this system aboard the Star of the Seas. Schneider noted that initial implementation will occur with a limited number of cabins, allowing for scale adjustments based on passenger feedback.
Privacy and Security Considerations
As this facial recognition system develops, Royal Caribbean acknowledges concerns regarding privacy and security. The technology will register not just passengers but also other personnel accessing the cabin, creating a detailed activity log.
Overall, the introduction of facial recognition technology at Royal Caribbean marks a significant step in enhancing the cruising experience, balancing convenience with security and personalization.
