Malik Benson, a standout receiver for the Oregon Ducks, has shown remarkable resilience throughout his football journey. From Lansing, Kansas, Benson faced numerous challenges before arriving at Oregon. His path included time at a community college, Alabama, and Florida State.
From Community College to Division I Success
Initially, Benson was lightly recruited out of high school, which led him to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. During his time there, he excelled and was recognized with All-America honors. His success at Hutchinson earned him the title of the top junior college recruit, leading him to enroll at Alabama in 2023.
At Alabama, Benson played in all 14 games, starting six, and recorded 13 receptions for 162 yards and one touchdown. However, his time with the Crimson Tide ended with the departure of coach Nick Saban, after which he transferred to Florida State. Unfortunately, Florida State faced a challenging season, finishing with a 2-10 record.
Transition to Oregon and Midseason Emergence
After a brief stint at Florida State, Benson found his way to Oregon. Upon joining the Ducks, he started slowly, sharing playing time with younger teammates like Jeremiah McClellan and Dakorien Moore. Despite limited touches initially, Benson remained patient, knowing his opportunity would eventually come.
His patience paid off as injuries to teammates opened the door for him to shine. In a crucial 18-16 win against Iowa, Benson caught a pivotal pass that set up the game-winning field goal. Additionally, he made a significant impact in a 42-27 victory over USC, showcasing his skills as a punt returner with a touchdown run.
