Americans Face New Year Without Healthcare Coverage

As the New Year begins, millions of Americans are facing a critical challenge: the absence of healthcare coverage. Among them is Adrienne Martin, a Texas mother who has become emblematic of the struggles many families nationwide are enduring due to skyrocketing healthcare costs.
A Drastic Increase in Premiums
Adrienne Martin, 47, recently learned that her monthly healthcare premium would increase from $630 in 2025 to an astonishing $2,400 starting in 2026. This drastic change is primarily due to the expiration of subsidies associated with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, which has provided crucial financial assistance to many.
Martin’s husband requires an expensive IV medication for a serious blood-clotting disease, which costs around $70,000 per month without insurance. Faced with these challenges, the family stockpiled the medication to navigate the initial months of the New Year without coverage.
The Expiration of Subsidies
The impending loss of subsidies is a significant concern for approximately 24 million Americans who purchase health insurance through the ACA marketplace. Most have relied on tax credits to make their monthly premiums more manageable. Originally instituted in 2014 under President Barack Obama, these subsidies were expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The political landscape in Washington has seen attempts from both Democrats and Republicans to extend these financial aids into 2026. However, legislative gridlock has stalled progress. Congressman Mike Lawler (R), who supports extending these subsidies, articulated the frustration felt by many, stating the importance of service to constituents.
The Financial Impact
Without the renewal of subsidies, healthcare costs are expected to surge by an average of 114%. For example, Maddie Bannister, a mother of two from California, experienced a rise in her monthly premium from $124 to $908. This increase forces families to make tough financial decisions.
- Adrienne Martin: Monthly premium increase from $630 to $2,400.

- Potential average healthcare cost increase: 114%.
Bannister expressed her concerns, noting that the cost of healthcare would impact her family’s savings for a new home. Meanwhile, Stephanie Petersen, another impacted individual, plans to return to Medicaid for more affordable coverage after her premiums surged from $75 to $580. She expressed skepticism about the future of affordable healthcare, stating that “everyone should have access to good healthcare without jumping through hoops.”
Legislative Hopes
A crucial vote on extending ACA subsidies is anticipated during the week of January 5. Until then, Adrienne Martin joins over 27 million Americans projected to be without health insurance this year. With rising healthcare costs, this number may further escalate. Many are voicing their frustration over the healthcare system’s inadequacies, particularly those who have worked hard but still cannot afford necessary insurance.
