New Year’s Day: What’s Open and Closed? Essential Holiday Updates

As New Year’s Day approaches, many people will be looking for information on what’s open and closed on this holiday. El-Balad has compiled essential updates for residents regarding services and operations throughout the day.
New Year’s Day Service Updates
Mail Services
On January 1, there will be no mail deliveries, allowing postal workers to enjoy the holiday.
Municipal and Government Offices
- Municipal, state, and federal offices will be closed.
Trash Collection in Worcester
In Worcester, there will be no trash pickup on New Year’s Day. All pickups scheduled for Thursday will occur on Friday. Trash that usually gets collected on Friday will be picked up on Saturday instead.
Public Library Hours
The Worcester Public Library will have adjusted hours. The main library at Salem Square and both the Frances Perkins and Great Brook Valley branches will close early at 2 p.m. on December 31. All libraries will be closed on New Year’s Day. Other branches will remain closed through January 2.
Transportation Services
- The MBTA will operate on a weekday schedule on New Year’s Eve.
- On New Year’s Day, the MBTA will switch to a weekend schedule.
- The WRTA will run Saturday routes on Wednesday, but there will be no service on Thursday.
