Edmonton Launches Extreme Weather Response to Start New Year
The City of Edmonton has initiated its extreme weather response, commencing on New Year’s Day. This activation addresses the forecasted severe cold temperatures expected to drop to minus-20 degrees Celsius or lower over the next few days.
Details of the Extreme Weather Response
The extreme weather response will officially start at 9 a.m. on January 1 and continue until 9 a.m. on January 6. This initiative aims to safeguard the city’s vulnerable populations during the harsh winter conditions.
Available Facilities and Services
Open city facilities, including libraries and recreation centres, will provide warm refuge during their standard operating hours. Residents who need relief from the cold are encouraged to take advantage of these spaces.

Shelter and Transportation Options
To further assist individuals during the extreme weather, the city has arranged multiple shelter shuttles. Two primary shuttles will operate throughout the winter season:
- Starting points: Southgate Transit Centre and Northgate Transit Centre.
- Destination: Downtown shelters.
Additionally, a third shelter bus will be available to help transport individuals to shelters with open spaces along a northern route.
Overnight Shelter Availability
The Al Rashid Mosque, located at 13070 113 St. NW, will serve as an overnight shelter from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. during these extreme weather responses.
