Disney has announced that the highly anticipated film, “Tron: Ares,” will start streaming on Disney+ on January 7. Directed by Joachim Rønning, this latest addition to the renowned Tron franchise debuted in theaters on October 10.

Tron Franchise History

Jeff Bridges reprises his iconic role as software engineer Kevin Flynn, originally portrayed in the 1982 classic “Tron.” He also appeared in the 2010 sequel, “Tron: Legacy,” which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Both previous films are currently available on Disney+.

Promotion and Box Office Performance

In 2023, Jared Leto and Jeff Bridges engaged audiences at CinemaCon and San Diego Comic-Con to promote “Tron: Ares.” Despite the promotional efforts, the film underperformed at the box office, garnering a total of $142 million globally.

Critical Reception

In a review by David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter, he critiqued that the film’s core story elements felt familiar and reminiscent of numerous movies. However, he praised Leto’s performance as Ares for bringing emotional depth and humor, which he felt were lacking in earlier installments. Additionally, Leto’s on-screen chemistry with Greta Lee, who plays Eve Kim, was highlighted as a strong point of the film.
