O’Sullivan’s Snooker Rival Faces Major Career Shift

James Wattana, a former world No. 3 snooker player, is making a significant career shift from the snooker table to the political arena. Reports indicate that he plans to run for a parliamentary seat in Thailand’s general election, scheduled for February 8, 2025.

Wattana’s Impressive Snooker Legacy

At 55, Wattana has a rich history in professional snooker. He began his professional career in 1989, quickly making a mark on the sport. Over the years, he captured the Thailand Open titles in 1994 and 1995, both held in Bangkok. His remarkable journey also includes two semi-final appearances at the World Championships in Sheffield, in 1993 and 1997.

One of his most memorable victories came when he defeated Steve Davis 9-7 to claim his first ranking title, thrilling millions on national television. He later defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan 9-6, solidifying his status in snooker history.

Recognition from Rivals

During a recent match at the Six-red World Championship in 2023, O’Sullivan acknowledged Wattana’s significant contributions to the growth of snooker in Thailand. He reminisced about their early encounters, recalling Wattana’s fame and the demand for his presence back then.

“When he was in his prime, he couldn’t go anywhere and needed a security police escort,” O’Sullivan commented. “He’s been massive for Thai snooker, and his influence is evident in the sport’s popularity today.”

A Pioneering Influence

Wattana not only achieved individual success but also paved the way for future snooker talents from Asia. His pioneering role has inspired players like Ding Junhui and Marco Fu. Currently, Thailand boasts several professional players, including Thepchaiya Un-Nooh and Noppon Saengkham, along with former women’s world champion Mink Nutcharut.

A Career in Politics

Now transitioning to politics, Wattana aims to bring the same passion and dedication to public service. His move to run as an MP reflects a desire to contribute to his community and influence the future of Thailand beyond the snooker table.

As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on Wattana to see how he adapts to this new challenge and how his legacy in snooker influences his political career.
