2025 Recap: Impact on Our Communities

In 2025, various community-focused initiatives and personal achievements marked the lives of residents in Winnipeg. Notably, two major themes emerged: the importance of access to transportation and the evolving community spirit.
2025 Recap: Impact on Our Communities
Ash Kunkel’s Bus Route Adventure
On January 4, 2025, 15-year-old Asher Kunkel from St. Vital achieved a remarkable goal by riding every bus route in Winnipeg’s public transit system. Joined by his family, Asher completed his journey, covering all 90 routes and expressing his joy in reaching this personal milestone. He began exploring Winnipeg Transit routes alone in September 2022, driven by a fascination with geography.
Community Roots Rink Opportunities
Winter activities thrived as the Community Roots rink at Jubilee Mennonite Church became a hub for local children. Area resident Cale Smyth, who helped maintain the rink, emphasized its value in offering children a place to play and learn hockey. The Community Roots Resource Centre successfully collected hockey equipment donations, enabling kids to enjoy the sport.
Food Access Bus Initiative
This winter, the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation launched the Food Access Bus in Elmwood. It provides transportation for seniors to major grocery stores, facilitating independent shopping. Executive Director Leilani Esteban Villarba highlighted the positive impact of this initiative, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Transition in Education: Closure of Children’s Choice Nursery School
After 44 years of operation, Children’s Choice Nursery School in Transcona closed its doors on June 18, 2025. Owner and educator Wendy Frejuk, affectionately known as ‘Teacher Wendy,’ reflected on her significant role in shaping the lives of local children over the decades.
Political Landscape Changes
The 2025 federal election on April 28 saw familiar faces return to Parliament, with Liberal and Conservative incumbents retaining their seats. Tragically, the unexpected death of city councillor Jason Schreyer on April 29 prompted community reflection on his contributions.
Community Highlights Throughout the Year
- Elmwood-EK Grocery Access Program: Launched in July, it offered discounted groceries to residents twice a month.
- St. Vital Agricultural Society Fair: Celebrated its 114th event in August, focusing on cultural diversity and community stories.
- Volunteer Efforts: In October, seven-year-old Hudson raised funds for winter clothing donations through community efforts.
- Healthcare Recognition: Dr. Ainslie Mihalchuk received the Family Physician of the Year award in November for her significant contributions to healthcare.
Local Developments in Education and Community Spaces
In December, Glenlawn Collegiate introduced a new logo designed by Indigenous artist Chris Chipak, emphasizing the school’s vision and values. Meanwhile, the Big Red Church initiated a fundraising campaign in September for roof repairs, aiming to cover costs through community contributions.
As 2025 came to a close, the stories of personal achievements, community initiatives, and transitions in leadership highlighted the resilience and dedication of Winnipeg’s residents. These narratives not only reflect individual milestones but also underscore the collective efforts shaping the community’s future.
