Equatorial Guinea Duo Suspended for Referee Abuse at AFCON

Equatorial Guinea has faced significant disciplinary actions following a recent match in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Two players from the National Thunder have been suspended due to alleged referee abuse.
Suspension Details
The players will miss the crucial final group match against Algeria, scheduled for Wednesday at 16:00 GMT. This suspension underscores the ongoing issues of discipline and behavior within the team.
Fine Imposed on Football Federation
In addition to the player suspensions, the Equatorial Guinea Football Federation (Feguifut) has been fined $10,000 (£7,435). This penalty was imposed due to “excessive and abusive protests” from players and technical staff against the referees’ decisions.
Behavioral Concerns
A report by referee Mvoutou highlighted a troubling trend, noting a “progressive deterioration in behavior” on the sidelines. This decline was particularly evident after an own goal by defender Saul Coco in the 74th minute.
Other Disciplinary Actions in AFCON
- Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traore has also faced sanctions.
- Traore was fined $10,000 (£7,435) for making “offensive remarks” after a match.
- This incident occurred following Burkina Faso’s 1-0 defeat to Angola in Group E.
These incidents highlight the challenges of maintaining discipline and respect for officiating within the tournament. As the competition progresses, stronger measures may be necessary to curb such behavior.
