James Penrice Considered by Rangers for January Transfer, Ex-Hearts Star Option

Rangers FC is reportedly considering a move to acquire James Penrice from AEK Athens during the upcoming January transfer window. The club had previously shown interest in the former Hearts defender but could not finalize the deal last summer.
James Penrice: A Target for Rangers
James Penrice, now 27 years old, transitioned from Hearts to AEK Athens in a transfer worth £2 million. Since joining the Greek club, he has made 24 appearances, with 15 of those as a starter. His performances have drawn attention from Rangers’ management, particularly under new manager Danny Rohl.
Background on James Penrice
- Previous Club: Hearts
- Transfer Fee: £2 million
- Current Club: AEK Athens
- Appearances for AEK: 24
- Starts: 15
Rohl has asked Dan Purdy, the club’s technical director, to monitor Penrice’s performance closely in Greece. This renewed pursuit indicates a strong interest in strengthening the left-back position, especially with current options limited.
Rangers’ Defensive Challenges
Rangers have been facing challenges on the left side of their defense. They have often relied on Brentford loanee Jayden Meghoma, who is just 19 years old. Additionally, on-loan centre-back Derek Cornelius, capable of playing on the flank, is sidelined with an injury sustained while on international duty with Canada.
Other Defensive Targets
Aside from Penrice, Rangers are also evaluating other potential signings. One of the names being assessed is Belgian Under-21 left-back Tuur Rommens. However, formal negotiations with Rommens’ current club, Westerlo, have not yet commenced.
Rangers’ Transfer Strategy Ahead of Old Firm Clash
With the Old Firm derby against Celtic approaching, Rohl is eager to bolster his squad quickly. He stated, “We cannot influence everything, but we are clear on what we want to do.” The upcoming window presents both opportunities and challenges for the club.
As Rangers prepare for upcoming matches, including the crucial clash at Celtic Park, the management remains optimistic about making effective additions that can enhance the team’s title ambitions.
