Laurent Nuñez Warns of Firm Measures for New Year Celebrations

Laurent Nuñez, France’s Minister of the Interior, has outlined a series of firm measures intended for New Year’s celebrations. With emphasis on maintaining order and safety, he announced significant police mobilization across the country.

Security Measures for New Year’s Eve

On New Year’s Eve, approximately 90,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed throughout France. Of these, 10,000 officers will be stationed in Paris and its nearby suburbs. The minister emphasized the importance of securing festivities as many people celebrate the transition to the new year.

Nuñez stated, “Many people go out to celebrate, so we must ensure their safety.” Additionally, he acknowledged the persistent issue of urban violence typically associated with year-end celebrations, underlining that the security approach aims to prevent such incidents.

Response to Agricultural Crisis

Nuñez also addressed the ongoing agricultural crisis related to contagious nodular dermatitis, which has incited outrage among farmers. Recently, law enforcement had to intervene in Auch to stop an irate farmer from using a tractor in a protest. The minister indicated that the situation was handled with flexibility, concluding that police actions—briefly drawing their weapons—were necessary to prevent further escalation while not referring the incident to the IGPN (General Inspectorate of the National Police).

Combatting Drug Use

Another pressing concern for Nuñez is the rising consumption of nitrous oxide among youths. This gas, often misused as a recreational drug, has been linked to numerous accidents. To combat its use, he announced plans to strengthen legislation governing its sale and transportation.

Furthermore, the minister highlighted the alarming increase in cocaine use in France, noting that consumption has tripled between 2012 and 2023. In response, he indicated that stricter penalties for drug use will be implemented. Starting soon, the fine for drug possession will increase from €200 to €500.

International Relations Focus

Amid these domestic issues, Nuñez expressed hopes regarding political developments in Algeria. Following the release of the writer Boualem Sansal, efforts continue for the liberation of journalist Christophe Gleizes. He affirmed that discussions are ongoing, albeit complicated by recent political tensions concerning France’s colonial history.

As the New Year approaches, the French government is poised to implement these firm measures, ensuring both safety and security during the celebrations while addressing broader social issues.
