Toronto Under Snow Squall Watch Amid Winter Storm Emergency in Barrie

The OPP has issued a warning regarding hazardous driving conditions in Ontario as snow squalls continue to affect the region. A snow squall watch is active for Toronto, where strong winds are contributing to difficult winter weather conditions. Environment Canada has issued a “yellow watch” for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including Toronto, as flurries are expected to start this afternoon.
Winter Storm Emergency in Barrie
Although snowfall amounts are not predicted to be significant, visibility may be compromised. Environment Canada warns that transient lake effect snow squalls from Lake Huron could impact the region throughout the day. Northwesterly winds, gusting between 50 and 70 km/h, are likely to cause blowing snow, particularly in open areas. This could result in visibility dropping to near zero in moments.
Travel Advisory and Road Conditions
Motorists are urged to be cautious due to rapidly changing travel conditions. Areas north of the GTA are facing harsher weather. The Township of Springwater, near Barrie, has issued an emergency alert, advising residents to avoid non-essential travel due to an ongoing winter storm. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported lane closures on Highway 400 around Innisfil Beach Road due to a multi-vehicle collision and poor road conditions.
Temperature Forecast and Warming Centres
Toronto is forecasted to reach a high of -4°C today, but wind chill will make it feel as cold as -18°C this morning and -12°C by afternoon. Similar weather is anticipated for New Year’s Eve, with flurries and potential snow squalls also expected. Winds gusting up to 40 km/h are predicted, with a high of -2°C but a wind chill making it feel like -13°C in the morning and -8°C in the afternoon.

- Locations include:
- 136 Spadina Road
- 81 Elizabeth Street
- 12 Holmes Avenue
- Metro Hall at 55 John Street
- 885 Scarborough Golf Club Road
Warming centres will be activated whenever the temperature is projected to drop to -5°C or when winter weather warnings are issued.
