Winter Storm Ezra Slams Midwest: Latest Updates

Winter Storm Ezra has significantly impacted the Midwest, causing widespread power outages and hazardous driving conditions. As of Tuesday morning, over 120,000 customers were without electricity across several states, notably Michigan, which was particularly hard-hit.

  • Michigan: Nearly 60,000 customers affected.
  • New York: More than 20,000 customers reported outages.

The storm, named Ezra by The Weather Channel, continues to bring blinding snow and high winds. In Michigan, Interstate 75 was partially closed due to 25 accidents involving 59 vehicles, including semi-trucks. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the highway reopened by late Monday morning.

In northern Iowa, a series of collisions occurred on Sunday involving 14 vehicles along Interstate 35. This stretch of highway remained closed from Ames to the Minnesota border, covering about 100 miles.

  • Near Twin Cities, Minnesota: Up to 7 inches of snow.
  • Far northern Wisconsin: Totals nearing a foot.
  • Marquette, Michigan: Exceptional totals of 24 inches.

In response to the winter storm, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has authorized the National Guard to aid in emergency operations. High wind warnings continue, along with advisories for heavy lake effect snow in the eastern Great Lakes regions, and these alerts are expected to persist for several days.

Following Winter Storm Ezra, a sharp cold front is anticipated, bringing dangerous wind chills to the Northern Plains. Additionally, regions in the South, which enjoyed above-average temperatures since Christmas, will experience a noticeable temperature drop.
