Why Young Britons Are Choosing to Work Abroad

Recent statistics reveal a notable trend among young Britons opting to work abroad. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), about 75% of British nationals who emigrated in the year ending June 2025 were younger than 35. This shift highlights the growing appeal of international opportunities for the youth.

Reasons for Emigrating

Several factors are driving this trend. Economic concerns in the UK play a significant role. High unemployment rates, rising debt, increased tax burdens, and a scarcity of graduate job openings are pushing young professionals to seek better prospects overseas.

Focus on Dubai

Dubai has emerged as a leading destination for young British expatriates. The city offers a plethora of benefits that attract job seekers. Key advantages include:

  • Tax-free salaries
  • Low crime rates
  • Thriving job market

According to David Little, a financial planning partner at UK wealth manager Evelyn Partners, the UAE provides a “can-do” attitude and a favorable business environment. Such conditions contribute to a more optimistic outlook for young professionals.

Changing Family Dynamics

Interestingly, families are now adapting their support for children. Traditionally, the “Bank of Mum and Dad” helped with home deposits. Today, parents are increasingly funding their children’s emigration and settling abroad.

This new trend illustrates the evolving aspirations of young Britons. As they increasingly pursue careers globally, the dynamic of family support is also changing, reflecting a broader shift in opportunities and lifestyles.
