New Year Begins with Cold and Snowy Weather

As the new year unfolds, Ithaca, New York, is experiencing the coldest December since 2000, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center. The chilly conditions are expected to persist, with clouds, snow, and low temperatures dominating the weather forecast as 2026 begins.

Weather Patterns in Ithaca

This week, forecasts indicate that a significant storm system is moving in from the Midwest. By tonight, it will approach Tompkins County, bringing a mix of precipitation. Initial rain is anticipated, but colder areas may experience brief sleet before temperatures rise.

Detailed Weather Report

  • Monday Morning: Rain is expected, with temperatures reaching 40°F by sunrise.
  • Monday Night: Strong northwest winds and light snow showers are likely.
  • Tuesday: Expect a cloudy and windy day with lake effect snow north of Ithaca.
  • New Year’s Eve: Conditions will remain cloudy, with intermittent snow showers.
  • Thursday: Cold temperatures will persist with lows around 10°F.
  • Friday: The weather will be mostly cloudy, dry, with highs in the mid-20s.

Tompkins County will see significant weather changes: strong winds with gusts up to 40 MPH are anticipated as the system moves northeast. Lows in the area are projected to dip into the low 20s, creating dangerous wind chills.

Looking Ahead

As the first week of 2026 progresses, temperatures are expected to moderate slightly. The trend indicates a cold start with a gradual warming towards January 10. A persistent ridge over Texas will likely lead to above-normal temperatures across the country, although Ithaca seems left out of this warming pattern for now.

Looking beyond next weekend, a polar high is set to move from the Upper Midwest towards the Mid-Atlantic, resulting in dry conditions. Although some lake-enhanced showers may occur north of Ithaca, overall weather will remain stable, with highs around 30°F.

This cold and snowy weather is a hallmark of the winter season in Ithaca as the community embraces the new year.
