City Announces Major Weather Event Starting at 6 p.m.

Orillia has declared a significant weather event, effective 6 p.m. on Sunday. Fire Chief Chris Ferry made this announcement as adverse weather conditions develop in the region. The city’s emergency control group will convene on Monday at 8:30 a.m. to assess the situation and potential further actions.
City Buildings And Services Affected
As part of the declaration, all city buildings will remain closed for the night. Their reopening is delayed until 11 a.m. on Monday, weather permitting. The following facilities are affected:
- Gill Street Community Complex
- West Orillia Sports Complex
- Barnfield Point Recreation Centre (closed from Dec. 25 to Jan. 1)
- Orillia Recreation Centre
- Orillia Youth Centre
In addition, Orillia Transit services have been suspended due to icy road conditions. Waste collection services may also experience interruptions on Monday.
Weather Warnings and Precautions
The city recommends residents avoid travel if possible due to deteriorating conditions. Environment Canada has issued an orange level freezing rain warning, predicting ice accretion of 15-20 mm in the region, leading to potential power outages and public safety risks.
Other municipalities, including Severn Township and Ramara, have also declared significant weather events. These notices inform the public that roadways and sidewalks are in a state of repair and could be unsafe.
