Heavy Snow and Strong Winds as Temperatures Plummet

Winter conditions are returning to West Michigan after a brief respite. A Weather Alert Day has been declared for Monday, December 29, 2025, due to the forecast of heavy snow and strong winds. Meteorologists predict a significant drop in temperatures following an unusually mild Sunday.

Weather Advisories in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch and a High Wind Watch for several counties in West Michigan from late Sunday through Monday evening. The counties affected by the Winter Storm Watch include:

  • Kalamazoo
  • Van Buren
  • Allegan
  • Barry
  • Kent
  • Ottawa
  • Muskegon

Predicted Snowfall and Wind Conditions

Heavy snowfall is expected across the watch area, with accumulations ranging from 4 to 7 inches near the lakeshore. Inland areas may see lighter accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. Wind gusts could reach as high as 55 mph, creating dangerous travel conditions.

Travel Risks and Warnings

Travel is expected to be treacherous, particularly by early Monday. Visibilities may drop to less than one-quarter mile, and potential whiteout conditions could further complicate matters.

Road Safety Measures

With the forecasted high winds and the likelihood of snowfall, road safety is paramount. A High Wind Watch has been issued for areas outside the Winter Storm Watch, where winds may also reach 50-55 mph. The following conditions are anticipated:

  • Increased risk of power outages due to downed trees and power lines.
  • Hazardous travel conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
  • Significant drifting and blowing snow, especially along the lakeshore.

Looking Ahead

Residents should prepare for the colder air and remain alert for additional snowfall as New Year’s Eve approaches. This winter weather system will likely persist, leading into challenges for holiday travel.
