Wu Daren: Strongest Winter Cold Snap Hits New Year, Temperature Drops to 7°C

Weather expert Wu Daren has reported that a significant winter cold snap is anticipated to impact Taiwan as the New Year approaches. Starting the evening of December 29 and continuing through December 31, the northeast monsoon will strengthen. This will pave the way for colder air to move southward beginning January 1, 2024.

Upcoming Cold Weather Patterns

According to the Central Weather Bureau, temperatures are expected to drop to levels below 7°C, particularly between January 2 and January 4. This period marks the entrance of the strongest cold air mass of the winter season. Wu emphasizes the importance of staying warm during this chilly spell.

Current Temperatures Across Taiwan

  • Hsinchu County – 11.4°C (lowest this morning)
  • Yunlin County – 11.7°C

Currently, areas south of Hsinchu are experiencing notable “radiative cooling,” with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 15°C across different regions. As the cold air approaches, residents are advised to prepare for a temperature drop.

Weather Forecast for New Year’s Weekend

On December 31, a gradual increase in cloud cover is expected in northern Taiwan, resulting in occasional light rainfall. The weather will remain mostly clear in other areas, with daytime temperatures feeling comfortable yet slightly warm. Nighttime will bring cooler temperatures.

Wu indicates that from January 1 to 2, short bursts of rain are likely in the northeastern and eastern part of the island, while southern and western areas may experience more sunny spells. By January 3 and 4, conditions will stabilize, though some areas in the east could see sporadic showers.

Preparation for Extreme Cold

The public is urged to take precautions as the cold air descends. The temperatures dropping below 7°C could pose health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations. It is essential to dress warmly and limit exposure to the cold.

After January 4, the intensity of the cold air will lessen, but another cold front is expected to arrive on January 6. Weather patterns will be closely monitored in the coming days.
