Winter Storm Set to Batter Northern Michigan Monday

The northern region of Michigan is bracing for a severe winter storm beginning Sunday. Multiple alerts are already in effect, warning residents of hazardous conditions.

Winter Storm Forecast for Northern Michigan

Starting late Saturday night, light freezing drizzle and rain are expected across the area. This could create slick and dangerous travel conditions early Sunday morning.

Weather Advisories Issued

  • A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service.
  • Areas affected include Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Wexford, and several more counties.
  • The advisory is in effect from 1 AM to 1 PM on Sunday for some counties, and from 4 AM to 1 PM for others.

As the day progresses, temperatures are expected to rise into the 40s due to a strong warm front, which will begin to melt some of the ice. However, a strong cold front is anticipated to move in overnight Sunday, sharply lowering temperatures.

Potential for Flash Freeze and Icy Conditions

The sudden drop in temperatures may lead to flash-freezing, especially in the eastern Upper Peninsula. This could result in additional freezing rain, with possible ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch.

Significant Snowfall Expected

Following the rain, snow is forecasted to move in, resulting in lake-effect snow. Travel is expected to become nearly impossible late Sunday night into Monday.

Snow Accumulation Predictions

  • Snowfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are anticipated south of M-55.
  • Areas north of M-55 or west of I-75 could see 4 to 8 inches.
  • The eastern Upper Peninsula may receive 8 to 16 inches or more.

Additionally, winds are expected to gust up to 50 mph, creating blizzard-like conditions that will further complicate travel.

Travel Advisory

Officials strongly advise against travel on Monday due to hazardous conditions. A Winter Storm Watch is currently in place from late Sunday night through Monday evening for a variety of counties, including Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Emmet.

Warnings in Effect

  • Winter Storm Warnings are already active for Chippewa and Mackinac Counties.
  • A Blizzard Warning has been issued for Luce County, in effect from 10 PM Sunday through 7 PM Monday.
  • High Wind Watches are also in place for several counties, anticipating wind gusts of 50 mph or greater.

Residents are urged to stay informed as El-Balad continues to monitor this impactful winter storm. Prepare for potentially dangerous winter conditions throughout the region.
