Gas Line Rupture Closes Major SoCal Freeway; Shelter Orders Lifted

A gas line rupture north of Los Angeles recently resulted in the closure of a major freeway and prompted shelter-in-place orders for thousands of residents. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, affecting approximately 19,000 residents in Castaic.

Details of the Incident

The Los Angeles County Fire Department received reports of an explosion at around 4:20 p.m. near North Park Elementary School, specifically at Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place. Responders noted a strong odor of gas in the area following the initial explosion.

Impact on Transportation

  • The 5 Freeway, a key route linking Southern California to Northern California and beyond, was shut down.
  • Both northbound and southbound lanes were closed north of Lake Hughes Road.
  • Traffic was diverted from eastbound and westbound lanes of SR-318 and SR-126.
  • The closure lasted for several hours, lifting around 8:45 p.m.

Response and Investigation

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department suspects a mudslide may have caused the rupture in the 600 psi natural gas transmission line. Fire Captain Brian Knight stated that emergency responders were awaiting SoCalGas personnel to shut off the 34-inch main gas line before they could investigate the site further.

  • A spokesperson from SoCalGas confirmed that the damaged section was located and isolated.
  • Gas venting continued as crews prepared to assess damages and initiate repairs.
  • No indications of an explosion were reported despite significant land movements observed near the break.

Public Safety Measures

Although no evacuation orders were issued, residents within a one-mile radius were advised to shelter in place until 10 p.m. They were instructed to close windows, doors, and vents, and to turn off HVAC systems. Firefighters reported no immediate threat to the greater Los Angeles area, but a strong smell of natural gas was expected across the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys.

Official Reactions

The incident attracted attention from various officials, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was briefed on the situation. The state’s Office of Emergency Services offered assistance in addressing the incident.

As of now, no injuries have been reported, and arson and explosives detectives, along with a hazardous materials team, are involved in the ongoing investigation.
