Powerful Earthquake Strikes Taiwan

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 struck off the coast of Taiwan on December 27, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake, which occurred at approximately 11:05 p.m. local time, had its epicenter located about 20 miles east of Yilan County.

Impact and Reaction

The Central Weather Administration of Taiwan rated the earthquake even higher, at a magnitude of 7.0. Residents in Taipei, the capital, reported feeling the tremors. However, the Taipei city government confirmed that there were no immediate reports of significant damage.

Recent Earthquake Activity

This seismic event follows another earthquake that struck Taiwan just days earlier. On December 24, a 6.1-magnitude quake affected the southeastern coastal county of Taitung, also shaking buildings in Taipei. These incidents highlight Taiwan’s vulnerability to earthquakes due to its location near the intersection of two tectonic plates.

Understanding Earthquake Magnitude

The magnitude of an earthquake indicates its strength. Michigan Technological University outlines the following scale:

  • Below 2.5: Generally not felt
  • 2.5 to 5.4: Minor or no damage
  • 5.5 to 6.0: Slight damage to buildings
  • 6.1 to 6.9: Serious damage
  • 7.0 to 7.9: Major earthquake with serious damage
  • 8.0 or greater: Massive damage, potential to destroy communities

As Taiwan continues to experience seismic activity, these events serve as a reminder of the geological forces shaping the region.
