Sudan PM Kamil Idris Unveils New Peace Initiative: African Union Update

Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris has launched a new peace initiative aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict that has plagued the nation since April 2023. This proposal was presented to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) amid severe humanitarian conditions affecting over 14 million people.
Kamil Idris’s Peace Initiative for Sudan
The proposal comes after nearly three years of civil war, triggered by a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). While Idris seeks to end the violence, the situation remains dire, especially in regions like Darfur and Kordofan.
Key Components of the Plan
- Immediate Ceasefire: Idris has called for a halt to hostilities, which would be monitored by the UN, the African Union, and the League of Arab States.
- RSF Withdrawal: A full withdrawal of RSF troops from territories they control is essential for peace efforts.
- Reintegration: Former RSF members will be placed in camps and screened, with those not accused of war crimes reintegrated into society.
- Future Elections: Idris commits to orchestrating free elections following a transitional period to encourage inter-Sudanese dialogue.
Responses and Challenges
Despite these proposals, the RSF has rejected Idris’s plan. An adviser to RSF leader Hemedti labeled the initiative as an outdated military rhetoric that lacks feasible solutions. The Quad group, which includes the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, advocates its own ceasefire plans amidst ongoing discussions.
Current Situation in Sudan
The humanitarian crisis continues to deteriorate. Recent escalations in fighting have led to mass displacement, with thousands fleeing to areas such as White Nile state. Cities like Kosti are already overwhelmed with displaced individuals, lacking sufficient resources and facilities.
International Observations
The peace plan has garnered mixed reactions. While Ahmed Aboul Gheit of the Arab League emphasized the proposal’s significance, analysts warn that success hinges on acceptance from the RSF and backing from international powers.
Humanitarian Impact
The ongoing conflict has created what the UN describes as the largest humanitarian crisis globally, with approximately 21 million people facing acute hunger. Efforts to provide aid are hampered by funding cuts, making the situation increasingly desperate.
Idris’s announcement underscores a crucial moment in Sudan’s quest for peace, although substantial challenges remain as the international community seeks to broker lasting solutions to the unrest.
