UMKC Orders Quick Exit from Deteriorating Troost Avenue Building

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has announced the urgent need for several organizations to evacuate their premises at 4825 Troost Avenue. This includes KCUR, Kansas City’s NPR affiliate, and Classical KC, effective January 31. The announcement has left staff members stunned.
Concern Over Building Safety
The decision was prompted by significant concerns regarding the building’s deteriorating condition. UMKC officials cited that the structure may soon be “uninhabitable.” This assertion was supported by an internal communication revealing that the HVAC system has reached the end of its operational life, and foundation settling issues had intensified.
Staff Reactions and Moving Challenges
KCUR General Manager Sarah Morris expressed that relocating two radio stations on short notice presents multiple challenges. The station is still recovering from earlier federal funding losses, making a move even more daunting.
- Building constructed: 1949
- KCUR moved in: 1985
- Evacuation deadline: January 31
The communication from UMKC pointed out the urgency of the situation. Concerns about the mechanical systems, including the boiler and sewer lines, were highlighted. If these systems fail, it could make the building uninhabitable without warning.
Union Concerns and Transparency Issues
The union representing KCUR staff expressed disappointment about UMKC’s limited transparency regarding the building’s condition. President Tom Gebken emphasized concerns about safety and the short notice given for the evacuation—just one month.
Future Plans for KCUR
Amidst the challenges of an unexpected move, UMKC assured the staff that efforts were underway to find a suitable new location. The university will provide moving supplies and hire a moving company to assist with the transition. However, it remains unclear if any additional financial support, such as rent assistance, will be made available to KCUR.
This situation unfolds during a period of transformation for KCUR, with plans to become an independent nonprofit organization by 2028, as previously announced by the station and UMKC.
UMKC reassured staff that the transition to separating from the current location will not alter the timeline set for their future independence. This transition remains an ongoing process.
