Rising Incidents of High-Volume Mail Theft Revealed by Data

The rise in high-volume mail theft incidents across the United States has alarmed law enforcement and postal officials. Recent data reveals a staggering increase in these crimes, particularly as the U.S. Postal Service faces its busiest season.
Growing Incidents of High-Volume Mail Theft
According to data shared by the Postal Police Officers Association, there were 52,000 reported high-volume mail thefts during the federal fiscal year 2024. This marks a significant rise from the previous year. For comparison, in 2010, only about 2,000 mail theft incidents were recorded.
Recent High-Profile Cases
Earlier this month, a concerning video captured a group of thieves escaping from a USPS office located on Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles. The FBI has since announced a reward of $100,000 for information leading to the arrests of those involved.
Frank Albergo, President of the Postal Police Officers Association, expressed his concerns regarding the criminals’ increasingly bold behavior. “They literally don’t care. They don’t think they are going to be caught because they probably won’t be caught,” he noted.
Current Law Enforcement Measures
At present, there are approximately 350 postal police officers assigned to protect USPS facilities across the nation. Albergo argues that this number is insufficient given the rising crime rates. However, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) is reportedly focusing on enhancing its efforts to combat mail theft. They have successfully apprehended over 3,000 individuals for such crimes in the past two years.
Despite these efforts, critics like Albergo maintain that more needs to be done to address the pervasive issue of mail theft. As the holiday season approaches, the urgency for effective solutions grows stronger.
Summary of Mail Theft Statistics
| Year | Reported High-Volume Mail Thefts |
|---|---|
| 2010 | 2,000 |
| 2023 | 52,000 |
This alarming trend necessitates heightened vigilance from both postal authorities and the public. As crime rates climb, comprehensive strategies must be implemented to safeguard mail and reduce theft incidents effectively.
