Government Launches $20 Million Package to Boost Mar Menor Sanitation

MITECO has announced a second aid package worth €20 million, aimed at enhancing municipal sanitation and purification networks. This initiative directly supports eight municipalities around the Mar Menor.

Details of the Aid Package

This funding falls under Line 4.3 of the Priority Action Framework for the Recovery of Mar Menor (MAPMM). It builds on a previous €20 million allocation that funded numerous projects in the region.

  • Total aid value: €20 million
  • Overall assistance to date: €40 million
  • Number of beneficiaries: Eight municipalities

Municipal Funding Distribution

The funds will be distributed as follows:

  • San Javier: €3.75 million
  • Los Alcázares: €3.75 million
  • Cartagena: €3.5 million
  • San Pedro del Pinatar: €3.5 million
  • Fuente Álamo: €1.5 million
  • Murcia: €1.5 million
  • Torre Pacheco: €1.5 million
  • La Unión: €1 million

Objectives of the Initiative

The primary focus of this funding is to strengthen local infrastructure related to wastewater and stormwater management. Special attention will be paid to:

  • Implementing separate drainage systems
  • Developing sustainable urban drainage systems
  • Integrating nature-based solutions, particularly in smaller communities

Aid must be executed within two years, with the transfer of funds taking place shortly after the municipalities formally accept the grants.

Progress from Previous Funding

This second allocation raises the total direct aid to €40 million for municipalities around Mar Menor. Previously, the first funding phase reported a 75% completion rate, expected to reach 100% by March 2026.

As a result of earlier funding, municipalities have successfully executed 52 projects, updated nearly 20,000 meters of sewage systems, and improved sanitation services for approximately 230,000 residents nearby.

This strategic financial input from the government highlights the commitment to revitalize and modernize the crucial sanitation infrastructure in the Mar Menor region.
