Dolphins’ Passing Struggles Highlighted in Defeat to Steelers, Says McDaniel

The Miami Dolphins faced significant challenges during their recent game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, particularly in their passing game. Head coach Mike McDaniel expressed concerns regarding the team’s performance, especially in the air. The Dolphins struggled offensively, which ultimately affected their ability to compete effectively.

Dolphins’ Passing Struggles in Steelers Defeat

The contest showcased a Miami defense that started strong but wavered as the game progressed. The Steelers’ defense, which had been weak against the run, contained Dolphins’ running back De’Von Achane, limiting him to just 60 yards on 12 carries. Overall, Miami finished with only 63 rushing yards, marking a significant downturn, as it was the first time since Week 10 that they rushed for fewer than 160 yards.

Tua Tagovailoa’s Performance

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa completed 22 of 28 passes for 253 yards, along with two touchdowns and one interception. However, these statistics were misleading. Much of his yardage came during three methodical drives in the fourth quarter when the game was already out of reach.

  • First Three Quarters:
    • Completed 6 of 10 passes
    • Gained 65 passing yards
    • One interception and two sacks
    • Generated only five first downs
    • Accumulated 93 total yards

Before the fourth quarter, the score was heavily tilted at 28-3, highlighting the team’s struggles. McDaniel indicated that multiple factors contributed to the passing inefficiency, emphasizing the need for improvement across the entire team, not solely on the quarterback.

Third Quarter Collapse

The third quarter proved disastrous for Miami, as they were out-gained 163 to -20, allowing nine first downs to none. This -20 net yardage in a single quarter marked the club’s lowest performance since at least 1991, when play-by-play statistics began. Such struggles in crucial moments have raised questions about the team’s readiness, particularly in cold-weather conditions.

Cold Weather Concerns

The Dolphins have now extended their streak to 14 consecutive losses in games with temperatures below 40 degrees. Tagovailoa’s career record in such conditions stands at 0-6, including playoff appearances, further emphasizing the need for strategic adjustments.

As the Dolphins look forward, addressing these passing struggles will be critical to achieving future victories. There is a clear message from Coach McDaniel: enhancing performance across the board is essential for success as they navigate the remainder of the season.
