Peter Lawwell Steps Down as Chairman

Celtic Football Club announced that Peter Lawwell will step down as non-executive Chairman, effective December 31, 2025. He has had a long association with the club, having served 18 years as Chief Executive and three years as Chairman. Lawwell publicly expressed his sadness over his decision, citing increasing abuse and threats that have negatively impacted his family.

Peter Lawwell’s Remarkable Journey

Lawwell joined Celtic as Chief Executive in 2003. Under his leadership, the club experienced significant achievements, including:

  • 38 cup or title victories
  • Consistent participation in European group-stage football for 19 out of the last 21 years
  • Development of key facilities like the training center in Lennoxtown and upgrades to Celtic Park

Returning in 2023 as non-executive Chairman, he oversaw board affairs and ensured the club’s financial stability. Lawwell reflected fondly on his time at Celtic, recalling memorable moments from his youth and the club’s broader impact through its foundation.

Reactions to Lawwell’s Departure

Dermot Desmond, a non-executive director and principal shareholder, expressed sorrow at losing Lawwell but respected his decision amid recent challenges. Michael Nicholson, the Chief Executive of Celtic, conveyed disappointment regarding Lawwell’s resignation.
