Brooklyn Hosts Major Robotics and Embodied Intelligence Hub

New York University (NYU) is taking a significant step forward in robotics research with the launch of its Center for Robotics and Embodied Intelligence. This facility, based at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, aims to establish a major new hub for robotics and embodied intelligence on the East Coast.

Significant Investment and Leadership

The Center is part of NYU’s strategic $1 billion investment in engineering, announced three years ago. Under the guidance of Juan de Pablo, NYU’s Executive Vice President for Global Science and Technology, the university is enhancing its capabilities in engineering and technology.

Facilities and Workforce

Over 70 faculty members, Ph.D. students, and post-doctoral researchers are engaged in robotics research within 10,000 square feet of innovative experimental spaces. A notable feature of the Center is its 6,800-square-foot flagship facility, located at 370 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration.

Addressing Research Gaps

Despite rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), its application in physical environments, known as embodied intelligence, remains underdeveloped. The Center’s focus encompasses various sectors, including healthcare, infrastructure, and disaster response.

Innovations in Robotics

The faculty at the Center have collectively secured over $30 million in research funding. Current projects concentrate on developing robots capable of navigating urban landscapes autonomously and enhancing movement algorithms that mimic human actions. Research areas also include:

  • AI-driven robot design
  • Physical human-robot interaction
  • Applications in climate science and space exploration

Commitment to Responsible Robotics

Professor Ludovic Righetti, co-director of the Center, emphasizes the importance of integrating responsible robotics principles into their research. This commitment ensures that robotic innovations are safe and beneficial for diverse communities.

Industry and Academic Collaboration

The Center collaborates with major companies such as Meta, Amazon, Google, and General Motors, aiming to translate research into practical applications. Additionally, it aims to engage with academic institutions across the New York metropolitan area to enhance research efforts.

Educational Initiatives

With the launch of the Center, NYU plans to develop the first Master of Science program in Robotics and Embodied Intelligence in the country. They will also introduce a doctoral track focused on this emerging field.

Future Aspirations

Professor Chen Feng, another co-director, envisions establishing the East Coast as a center of innovation in robotics, rivaling traditional hubs like Silicon Valley. This initiative reflects NYU’s broader dedication to expanding its interdisciplinary research and educational infrastructure.
