UK Schools Shut Again Amid Severe Snowfall Outside London

Severe weather has led to the closure of all public and Catholic schools outside London for the second consecutive day. This decision was made due to hazardous road conditions caused by significant snowfall in the area. Environment Canada meteorologist Daniel Sheldon has reported an additional forecast of 20 centimetres of snow.
Current Weather Conditions
Snow squalls moved through the region early in the morning and are expected to return throughout the day. Sheldon indicated that these squalls are mainly affecting areas northeast of London, including Goderich, Bayfield, and Woodstock. However, they are likely to drift southward later in the day.
Expected Accumulation
Parts of Ontario are bracing for severe snowfall, with Goderich, Stratford, St. Mary’s, and Woodstock potentially receiving up to 40 centimetres by day’s end. The lake effect snowfall will weaken overnight.
School Closures and Safety Measures
- The Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board have closed schools in Elgin, Oxford, and Middlesex counties.
- Students have been directed to attend online classes.
- Schools within the city of London remain open, and bus services are operational.
Road Safety Concerns
Wednesday’s heavy snowfall resulted in dangerous conditions on the roads. Provincial police responded to approximately 400 accidents in southwestern Ontario. This included an incident involving two police cruisers, where two officers sustained minor injuries.
Travel Warnings
Sheldon warns motorists about rapidly changing travel conditions on Thursday. Drivers heading eastbound on Highway 401 from London or north towards Perth County should take caution. Visibility can shift from clear to a complete whiteout in a matter of minutes.
Weekend Weather Outlook
Looking ahead to Friday, the weather is expected to be cloudy, with temperatures reaching a high of minus 2 degrees Celsius. Cold temperatures and the potential for more lake effect snow are anticipated over the weekend.
