Liberty University Delivers Shoebox Gifts to Hurricane-Hit Jamaica Aboard Historic DC-8

Liberty University recently concluded a significant mission, delivering essential Christmas gifts to children in Jamaica using a historic aircraft. The final flight of the last U.S.-registered DC-8 made its way to Lynchburg Regional Airport on December 7, 2025. This mission marked not only the aircraft’s retirement but also its legacy as a tool of humanitarian outreach.

Historic Flight and Gift Delivery

On December 5, 2025, a team from Liberty University, led by President Dondi E. Costin and Chancellor Jonathan Falwell, departed from Greensboro, North Carolina. They traveled aboard the DC-8 to deliver 9,200 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to children devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

Engagement with Local Communities

Upon arrival in Kingston, the team participated in outreach activities at Bible Truth Ministry International, where they distributed 100 shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, and personal care items. Liberty students, including Cassie Straub, president of Liberty’s Operation Christmas Child Club, expressed their joy in seeing the shoeboxes packed at Liberty being shared with children in Jamaica.

Chancellor Falwell noted the personal significance of this mission, recalling childhood experiences of packing shoeboxes with his family.

Legacy of the DC-8

The DC-8 aircraft, the largest to have operated at Lynchburg Regional Airport, served as Samaritan’s Purse’s primary heavy-lift aircraft for over a decade. It has transported more than 9.2 million pounds of cargo on 218 missions worldwide. Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse, emphasized the aircraft’s vital role in disaster response.

A Permanent Reminder at Liberty University

Following its final flight, the DC-8 will be displayed at Liberty University, along with an accompanying museum. This gesture aims to inspire future generations about the role of aviation in ministry. President Costin highlighted the importance of faith and sacrifice in this mission.

Liberty University has long collaborated with Samaritan’s Purse, reinforcing their shared commitment to humanitarian relief. This historic aircraft symbolizes their dedication to spreading the Gospel while serving those in need.
