More than 100 individuals on board the AIDAdiva cruise ship have contracted norovirus, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This incident took place during a worldwide voyage, which began on November 10 from Hamburg, Germany.
Key Details of the Outbreak
The AIDAdiva is currently engaged in a 133-day journey that includes stops in 26 countries, such as:
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Japan
- South Africa
- Portugal
- Mexico
- Sri Lanka
The norovirus outbreak was initially reported on November 30, two days after the ship departed from Miami en route to Cozumel. A total of 95 passengers and six crew members have been affected, experiencing symptoms primarily consisting of diarrhea and vomiting.
CDC Response and Recommendations
In response to the outbreak, the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program has advised the crew to implement several measures, including:
- Isolation of sick passengers and crew members
- Enhanced cleaning and disinfection protocols
- Collection of stool samples for further testing
The cruise is scheduled to conclude its journey and return to Hamburg on March 23.

The CDC has recorded a total of 17 confirmed outbreaks of norovirus on cruise ships in 2025. This figure marks an increase from 15 outbreaks in 2024 and 13 in 2023. The rise in cases highlights ongoing concerns regarding norovirus in the cruise industry.
