Monday May Set Significant Cold Records

The province of Quebec is bracing for an exceptionally cold day on Monday, December 8, 2025. Meteorologists predict that this day may break significant cold weather records across the region.
Forecast for Quebec’s Bitter Cold
According to weather expert Alexis Vazquez, a cold air mass has settled over Quebec. This has resulted in lower-than-average winter temperatures. The anticipated high temperature in Montreal is projected to reach a chilling -13°C. In more northern areas like Chibougamau, temperatures could plummet to -17°C.
Feeling the Chill
This intense cold will create a biting sensation for residents. Despite the frigid conditions, sunshine is expected throughout the day, providing a slight comfort. However, the perceived temperatures may remain alarming, with values potentially falling to -21°C in Montreal by Monday afternoon.
Potential Record-Breaking Cold
On December 8, 1976, Montreal recorded a low of -15.0°C. The forecasted -13°C for this Monday comes close, presenting a chance to challenge that longstanding record. Meanwhile, regions such as Mont-Tremblant and Ottawa are more likely to see new records set, with predicted highs of -14°C. This is alarmingly near the historic lows of -14.8°C and -14.7°C recorded on December 8, 2000.
- Montreal Forecast: -13°C, close to the record.
- Chibougamau Forecast: -17°C.
- Mont-Tremblant & Ottawa Forecast: -14°C, near record lows.
A Look Back at Cold Records
This Monday marks the lowest anticipated maximum in Montreal in over two years. The last similar high temperature was recorded on February 25, 2023, when it also peaked at -13°C.
The arctic chill is expected to linger until Tuesday, with gradual improvement by mid-week. Temperatures should begin to align more closely with seasonal averages in the southern, central, and eastern parts of Quebec by Wednesday.
