Trump Criticizes Democrat Rep. Cuellar for Not Switching Parties Post-Pardon

Former President Donald Trump expressed his frustration over Representative Henry Cuellar’s decision to remain a Democrat after receiving a presidential pardon. Cuellar and his wife were pardoned in connection with a federal bribery and conspiracy case, yet Trump expected him to switch parties, claiming it showed “a lack of loyalty.”

Trump’s Criticism of Cuellar

Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to voice his disappointment. He highlighted that Cuellar was continuing to align himself with the “radical left” that initially pursued legal actions against him and his wife. Trump argued that this was not well received by Texas voters or Cuellar’s family.

“Such a lack of LOYALTY, something that Texas Voters, and Henry’s daughters, will not like,” Trump remarked. He added, “Oh’ well, next time, no more Mr. Nice guy!”

Cuellar’s Response

In a subsequent television appearance, Cuellar defended his position. He described himself as a conservative Democrat open to collaboration with the current administration. Cuellar emphasized his identity as an American and a Texan before identifying as a Democrat.

  • Cuellar stated, “I think anybody that puts party before their country is doing a disservice to their country.”
  • He also articulated his desire to find common ground with the administration.

Cuellar acknowledged that his daughters had reached out to Trump, urging for a pardon, which was ultimately granted. This clemency was characterized by Trump as a necessary action to stop a “weaponized” prosecution against the Cuellars.

Political Landscape and Implications

Cuellar remains a notable critic of President Joe Biden’s immigration policy, aligning with some conservative positions that resonate with Trump’s base. Despite calls for a party switch, Cuellar believes he is well-placed to win reelection in his South Texas district, which has not undergone significant changes from recent redistricting.

Cuellar’s district includes parts of metro San Antonio, and he expressed confidence in his ability to maintain good relationships within the Democratic Party, while also asserting his independence.

Legal Challenges Ahead

Although pardoned, Cuellar still faces an ongoing investigation by the House Ethics Committee. He has maintained his innocence regarding the charges connected to accepting bribes in return for legislative favors tied to an Azerbaijan-controlled energy company.

  • Cuellar claimed federal authorities attempted to entrap him through a failed sting operation.
  • The trial against him and his wife had been scheduled for April.

The political maneuvers following Trump’s presidency are critical as the GOP strives to defend its House majority ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
