David Corenswet Disagrees with James Gunn on Superman Kiss Scene

David Corenswet recently expressed his disagreement with director James Gunn regarding a pivotal scene in the upcoming Superman film. During an engaging conversation with Jonathan Bailey for Variety’s Actors on Actors, the 32-year-old actor discussed the nuances of Superman and Lois Lane’s kiss at the movie’s conclusion.

Dispute Over Superman Kiss Scene

In this romantic moment, Superman shares an affectionate exchange with Lois Lane after she declares her love. Corenswet reminisced about his reaction to Gunn’s initial feedback on the scene. He revealed that during filming, Gunn suggested that the moment should be more serious, stating, “It’s not working. It needs to be solemn.” Corenswet disagreed, insisting that the light-hearted chuckle captured the genuine essence of their connection.

Director’s Vision vs. Actor’s Interpretation

Corenswet recognized Gunn’s talent, saying, “Credit to James. He was right on 90 percent of everything, but on that one, he saw that chuckle was a very truthful thing.” Jonathan Bailey praised Corenswet’s performance, affirming that such moments are what elevate a leading actor’s role.

Corenswet’s Unique Relationship with Gunn

James Gunn is known for his successful direction of films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Suicide Squad. He auditioned over 400 actors before selecting Corenswet for Superman, partly due to the chemistry between him and Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane.

Corenswet has previously characterized his collaboration with Gunn as uniquely productive. He appreciates Gunn’s blunt directing style, noting, “James has this habit of…yelling directions at you.” He finds this directness beneficial for his growth as an actor, admitting, “I desperately need a director.”

Upcoming Projects

Looking ahead, Corenswet and Gunn will join forces again for the Superman sequel titled Man of Tomorrow. This highly anticipated film is scheduled for release in July 2027.
