Her interest sparked when she discovered Uncaged Innovations, a New York-based start-up, which has developed a bio-based leather substitute called Elevate. This innovative material is made from grain by-products, natural rubber, plant oils, mineral pigments, and flower extracts.

Since its launch in 2020, Elevate has gained traction, being adopted by notable companies in the automotive sector like Jaguar Land Rover and Hyundai Motor Group. Portman aims to inspire others by showcasing that a wardrobe free from animal products is achievable. She emphasizes that quality, ethical, and environmentally friendly materials can be accessible at competitive price points. “I don’t want to preach too much, but I think when people know that it’s possible, most would opt for the animal-friendly, eco-friendly version,” she stated.
