Cape Verde’s World Cup Foe, Uruguayan Club Inspired by Brazilian Team

Cabo Verde is gearing up for its World Cup debut in 2026, competing in Group H alongside Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. One of its notable clubs, Unidos do Norte, embodies a unique connection to Brazilian football culture.
Unidos do Norte: A Club with Brazilian Inspiration
Founded in 1992, Unidos do Norte (UDN) is based in Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde. The club competes in the top division of the Santiago do Sul Championship.
Design Influences from the Esporte Clube Pelotas
UDN’s emblem is inspired by the logo of the Brazilian team, Esporte Clube Pelotas. The club’s badge features the letters “UDN” in a style reminiscent of Pelotas, with a blue background and golden highlights.
Interestingly, their primary uniform is blue with white details, while their away kit is entirely white, omitting the golden color seen in the original Pelotas kit.
Performance in the Santiago do Sul Championship
- UDN competes in the first division of the Campeonato de Santiago do Sul.
- In the 2025/2026 season, the team has played five matches.
- Current record: 0 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws.
Most matches are held at the government-managed Estádio da Várzea in Praia.
Connection to Pelotas’ Legacy
In a 2022 interview with Arquivo Lobão, former president Nelo Furtado shared the story behind the club’s logo. The search for a distinct emblem led them to the Pelotas logo online. Furtado expressed admiration for Pelotas’ passionate fans and its rich history, stating that their mascot and vibrant support inspired him and the team.
Cabo Verde’s Historic World Cup Qualification
With a population of approximately 525,000, Cabo Verde is among the smallest nations to qualify for a World Cup, following Iceland. Their landmark qualification came after a decisive 3-0 victory over Eswatini, securing their top position in Group D of the African qualifiers.
As the World Cup approaches, both the nation and its clubs, such as Unidos do Norte, represent the spirit and potential of Cabo Verdean football on the global stage.
