Home and Away Implements Major Behind-the-Scenes Change Affecting Key Personnel

Home and Away has announced a significant change behind the scenes, impacting its writers. As the show pauses for the Christmas period, the Seven Network has decided to transition script department employees from fixed-term contracts to permanent employment.
Key Changes for Writers
This decision follows advocacy from the Australian Writers’ Guild (AWG). The Guild had campaigned to end the practice of ending contracts during the show’s holiday hiatus. According to AWG Director Bryant Apolonio, this previous arrangement left writers without pay or job security.
Details of the Agreement
- The writers were previously on fixed-term contracts that ended in December.
- Contracts were reissued in January, causing gaps in employment.
- The new permanent contracts ensure job security year-round.
- Writers will now receive pay for public holidays during production breaks.
The decision aligns with amendments made in 2022 to the Fair Work Act, which restrict fixed-term contracts. The AWG worked with the Seven Network to clarify that these amendments applied to soap writers. Following discussions, the network agreed to make this transition.
What’s Next for Home and Away
The soap recently concluded its season with a gripping cliffhanger. Viewers will see the aftermath of a train accident when it returns on January 19, 2026. Characters Levi Fowler and Tane Parata will defy police orders to rescue loved ones trapped in a tunnel.
Additionally, fan-favorite characters Darryl “Brax” Braxton and Ricky Sharpe are set to return for a storyline set in Western Australia, further expanding the show’s appeal.
Airing Schedule
- In the UK, Home and Away airs weekdays at 1:45 PM on Channel 5.
- Repeats are available at 6 PM on 5STAR.
- New episodes can be streamed on 7Plus in Australia with airings from Monday to Thursday at 7 PM.
This new direction for Home and Away not only enhances job security for its writers but also promises exciting developments for fans as the show resumes its beloved storytelling.
